1. For all purposes under the Act and Regulations, to be eligible for registration on the Physician Assistants Register and licensure as a Physician Assistant, an applicant must:
a) have obtained certification from either the Physician Assistants Certification Council of the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants or the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants,
b) Provide evidence of good character and evidence of fitness to practice, including professional and ethical behavior, which includes:
- through self-disclosure;
- certificates of professional conduct from each jurisdiction in which they held a licence;
- letters of reference; or
- or other information as requested by the College,
c) Provide a criminal record check in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons’ Criminal Record Check Policy,
d) Be legally entitled to live and work in New Brunswick,
e) Be proficient in one of the two official languages of the province of New Brunswick,
f) Provide proof of liability Insurance upon approval, and
g) Pay the applicable fees.
2. Physician Assistants may practice in any clinical setting.
3. A Physician Assistant must, at all times, practice under the clinical supervision of an identified physician or physicians, which supervising physician or physicians must meet the following requirements:
a) have a valid Regular Licence or Defined Licence issued by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick; and
b) be in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick,
4. A Physician Assistant’s practice of medicine is limited to the scope of their current supervising physician’s or physicians’ training or recent experience.
5. A supervising physician must:
a) Delegate to a Physician Assistant or authorize a Physician Assistant to perform solely those tasks that come within the scope of the supervising physician’s training or recent experience,
b) Provide supervision reports to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick as required by the College, and
c) Maintain a current documented practice description that details the current scope of practice for the Physician Assistant under their supervision.
6. A Physician Assistant may issue prescriptions only for medication which the supervising physician has determined the Physician Assistant is qualified to prescribe and such prescriptions shall identify the Physician Assistant and the supervising physician.
7. For greater certainty, as associate members of the College, Physician Assistants are subject to all such provisions of the Medical Act, Regulations and Code of Ethics as may be applicable.
